Ned Schwing said in his reference guide on the Design Winchester firearms maintenance tips 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began evidence marking them in 1908… I have no idea if which is accurate, but will assume that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was utilized once the barrel and receiver ended up mated, assembled and finished. This is very obvious over the firearms created while in the late teens by early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off when the proof was struck within the receiver frame.

This is an important issue mainly because it factors to a few practices from the manufacturing process. 1. Winchester of course had Plenty of room for parts to be stored for comprehensive time in advance of use. I have discovered lots of late production rifles which have a mix of barrel stamp kinds which suggests that A great deal more mature barrel were at last used and marked in the more recent way prevalent at some time of assembly. and 2. Parts were obviously not used on a “initial built/1st used” basis. Compared to todays manufacturing attempts these methods seem really inefficient.
